The Saint Petersburg KB Kirov Zavod built Item 830 series chassis is the baseline vehicle employed for all key components of the S-300V family of SAM systems. Not only are the 9A82 and 9A83 TELARs  and the 9A84 and 9A85 TEL/Transloader vehicles based on the 830, but also the 9S457 mobile command post, the 9S15 Bill Board acquisition radar, the 9S19 High Screen ABM early warning radar, and the 9S32 Grill Pan engagement radar. The S-300V was developed to provide SAM/ABM cover for Soviet heavy armoured formations and thus required cross country capability competitive against Soviet MBTs. The Item 830 series is  claimed to have been derived from the 2S7 SP gun and T-80 MBT chassis and met this requirement. The nearest equivalent general purpose chassis is the Ukrainian built MT-T/MT-TM series.

The 9A84 and 9A85 TEL/Transloader vehicles are similar to the 9A82 and 9A83 TELARs, but lack the X-band illuminator antenna employed for missile terminal guidance. Instead, these vehicles have cranes mounted to perform loading and transloading to TELARs of missile round tubes.

A proposal which emerged some years ago is the S-300VMK (K - Колесные), a variant of the S-300VM in which the MT-T series tracked chassis is replaced by the BZKT (Bryanskiy Zavod Kolesnikh Tyagachey) BAZ 69096 10 x 10 all terrain truck chassis, a vehicle design more frequently associated with heavy cranes and drilling rigs. This vehicle family is also used for the new S-400 Triumf 5P85TE2 TEL, and as an artillery tow tractor.

The gross weight of the BAZ 69096 10 x 10 is almost 50 tonnes, required given the weight of the S-300VM components. Road speed is limited to 50 km/h. The configuration for the S-300VMK includes a non-standard extended crew cabin.
