LtCol Walter “BJ” E. Bjorneby, USAF (Retd)





LtCol Walt “BJ” Bjorneby, USAF (retd), is a retired US Air Force Command Pilot with extensive operational and combat experience.

LtCol Bjorneby was a combat ready pilot in the F-86F Sabre, F-86D Sabre, F-102A Delta Dagger, F-104A Starfighter, F-4D and F-4E Phantom II covering a period of 22 years and 5000 flying hours.

He flew no less than 150 combat missions in the F-4D/E Phantom in the 366th TFW based at Da Nang AB RVN, of which 15 were flown into North Vietnamese airspace. LtCol Bjorneby is credited with kills against five North Vietnamese S-75/SA-2 Guideline Surface to Air Missile sites during this period.

He was Squadron Commander of the 68th and 390th Tactical Fighter Squadrons.  As CO of the 390th TFS at Da Nang he lost no personnel to enemy action.

LtCol Bjorneby served as a pilot in the 25th FIS, 326th FIS, 332th FIS, 319th FIS, 307th TFS, 68th TFS, 4th TFS, 390th TFS, 307th TFS. He has flown as Maintenance Test pilot in the T-33, F-102A, F-4E, and served as Weapons Officer in F-102A units.

LtCol Bjorneby is a keen student of aerial combat and is well known for his critical thinking and commentaries on this subject. He has previously published on the subject of air power in COunter INsurgency (COIN) operations.
